Antipascha. Thomas Sunday

The Polish-American poet Czeslaw Milosz writes: “Christ is risen.” Whoever believes that / Should not behave as we do. / Who have lost the up, the down, the right, the left, heavens, abysses, / And try somehow to muddle on…

By this Sunday we are likely feeling ‘post-paschal letdown syndrome’. It may even be hard to greet one another with the Pascal greeting “Christ is Risen!, let alone to keep the joy of the Resurrection foremost in our lives.

We muddle along. We have a constant, continual need for renewal. We need the Holy Spirit, the coming of Grace to make our recent paschal experience the stable ground of our life in Christ.

We have tried to enter into the story of our salvation by participating ‘with full attention’ in Holy Week and Pascha. We continue to try to live in it as we anticipate the Ascension and Pentecost in the days ahead. We will not only celebrate and mysteriously participate in these events, but recognize that we are products of them; we have received new life, our Christian identity, become members of the Body of Christ, by the great sacramental acts—Baptism, Chrismation, Eucharist—that unite us to Christ and form Him in us by the power of the Holy Spirit.

~ Fr. Andrew
