Altar Server Rules
Being an altar server is a privilege,
and with it comes responsibilities.
- You must serve when you or your team is scheduled, or
you must find a substitute. This is especially important with Vespers,
and 2nd Liturgy.
- You must be in the altar at least 15 minutes before
the start of service. If you have not received a blessing before the
start of service, you will not be allowed to serve.
- You cannot serve on Sunday mornings during the
(church) school year, unless you are scheduled. (During the summer, you
are welcome to serve any service you attend, but if there is a shortage
of robes, preference will go to members of the scheduled team)
- You must be properly dressed to serve. Proper attire
is as follows:
a. Necktie (bowties are acceptable)
b. Collared shirt (in the event that you don’t arrive with a necktie on)
c. Non-denim pants. Blue jeans (and black jeans) or shorts are not
acceptable.
d. Close-toed dress shoes (Tennis shoes and sandals are not acceptable)
A limited number of ties and dress shirts are available at the
cathedral for temporary use.
- To serve Sunday Divine Liturgies, and other major
services, you must be in 2nd grade, and have gone through a 3-4 week
training session for beginner altar servers.
- Training can be done at any time, and should be
scheduled with Nathaniel Kostick (contact info below). Any boy is eligible for
training after Pascha in his 1st grade year. Any boy not yet of age can
only serve non-Liturgy services, and must contact Nathaniel Kostick for
approval before the day of the service.
- The only people with authority to override these
rules are: Nathaniel Kostick or Fr. Andrew Morbey.
- Wine mixed for after communion is to be used for the
next service, or thrown out. Altar servers are not allowed to finish
the wine behind the altar.
- The altar and everything in it is sacred, and demands
the utmost respect at all times!
We want being an Altar Server to be a fun
and educational opportunity, but it is a serious task. Failure to
respect this unique and fun opportunity will not be tolerated.
Enough said, right?! Now, on the lighter side of things, if there is
interest, we will try to organize a number of social activities over
the next year (retreats, possibly a trip to a Twins game, a dodge ball
tourney, or whatever else people want to do) which tend to be a lot
more light-hearted than serving Divine Liturgies. It's not all "fun and
games" but some of it ought to be!
If you have any questions or concerns about any of the rules stated
above (or anything else, for that matter), please contact Nathaniel Kostick, at any time, either in person, by phone, or email
(listed above). Check here for future updates.
